Accessibility statement for Pittington Parish Council
The Parish Council is committed to making its website accessible and usable for as many people as possible. We want everyone to be able to use this website without difficulty.
What you should be able to do on this website
We aim to ensure that users can:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 300% without text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We have also tried to make the website text as clear and simple as possible.
AbilityNet provides advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
This website is largely compliant with WCAG 2.2 AA. Automated testing using the WAVE accessibility tool currently reports a score of 9.7
However, we know that some parts of the website are not fully accessible:
- some older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- some online forms can be difficult to navigate using just a keyboard
- some moving or animated content on the homepage cannot be paused or controlled using a keyboard
- some areas of the homepage and some headings do not meet minimum colour contrast requirements
- in some cases, text may not reflow into a single column when browser window size is reduced
What to do if you cannot access parts of this website
If you need information on this website in a different format, such as an accessible PDF, large print, easy read, or audio version, please contact the Parish Clerk, and we will consider your request and respond as soon as possible.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The Parish Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Some images may not have appropriate alternative text. This may affect users of screen readers.
This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).
We aim to ensure that new content meets accessibility standards and to improve older content where possible.
Disproportionate burden
Some accessibility issues relate to legacy page layouts and historic content, including:
- text resizing that may cause content overlap
- limitations in changing orientation or layout on some devices
- older coding practices that may affect screen reader interpretation
We have assessed the cost and impact of resolving these issues and believe that fixing them immediately would place a disproportionate burden on the Parish. These issues will be reviewed as part of future website updates.
Interactive tools and forms
Some forms are difficult to navigate using only a keyboard, for example where form controls are missing clear labels. We aim to address this as templates and systems are updated.
Content outside the scope of the regulations
PDF and Word documents published before 23 September 2018 are not required to be fully accessible unless they are essential to providing a service.
How we tested this website
This website is tested annually using automated accessibility tools, including WAVE, and through ongoing review by our website provider. Accessibility is considered when publishing new content.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We will continue to test new content before publication.
We will review templates, layouts and plugins for accessibility.
We will act on and respond to all feedback we receive.
We will make improvements as part of regular website updates.
